|90-92+ THE WINEADVOCATE: "Opaque purple-black colored, the 2020 Balestard la Tonnelle opens with notes of cedar chest, stewed black plums and boysenberry preserves, giving way to notions of damp soil, tar and unsmoked cigars with a waft of dried Provence herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate is a little woody at this nascent stage, offering a lot of juicy black fruit beneath the oak with a chewy texture and bags of freshness, finishing long and spicy."
91-93 FALSTAFF: "Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Einladendes schwarze Herzkirschenfrucht, Nuancen von frischen Pflaumen, kandierte Orangenzesten, tabakige Noten. Saftig, gute Komplexität, zart nach Brombeeren und Cassis, frisch strukturiert, mineralisch und anhaftend, gutes Reifepotenzial."
92-93 JAMES SUCKLING: "A ripe, round red with blackberry, plum and cherry character. Medium-to full-bodied with chewy tannins and a flavorful finish."
91-93 ANTONIO GALLONI: "The 2020 Balestard La Tonnelle is powerful and explosive in the glass. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, spice, tobacco and licorice saturate the palate. Sumptuous and brooding in the glass, the 2020 possesses tremendous depth as well as energy. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages I can remember tasting. There is quite a bit of potential here."
91-93 NEAL MARTIN: "The 2020 Balestard La Tonnelle has one of the appellation’s more understated bouquets, and the restraint pays dividends in the form of fine delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with good definition, fine grip and minerality, offering vivacious black fruit laced with cedar, dark chocolate and mint on the finish. There is a sensuality to this Balestard that I like, and I hope it remains in situ once in bottle."
90-92 THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "With a strong touch of oak right out of the gate, the deeply colored wine also brings you incense, spice box, licorice and black with blue fruit. Forward, lush and round, the finish is all luscious red berries and espresso notes."
