|93-95 THE WINEADVOCATE: "The 2020 Villemaurine sports a very deep purple-black color, springing from the glass with vibrant notes of black cherry preserves, ripe black plums and wild blueberries, plus touches of Indian spices, menthol and cedar chest with a waft of fragrant earth. The medium to full-bodied palate is soft and juicy with a lively backbone to lift the seductive exotic spices to a nice long and harmonious finish. The blend this year is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aging for an anticipated 16 months in French oak, 80% new. The alcohol is 14.5%."
91-93 FALSTAFF: "Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Zart floral unterlegt, kandierte Veilchen, schwarze Herzkirschen, Orangenzesten sind unterlegt. Gute Komplexität, etwas Zimt und Kardamom, reife Pflaumen, integrierte, reife Tannine, etwas Nougat im Nachhall, dezente Süße im Rückgeschmack."
93 DECANTER: "Juicy and powerful with a nice saline limestone tug. A little subdued right now, this is a wine that needs time but has clear quality and plenty of depth through the palate. New owners as of 2021, the Lefevre family from Château Sansonnet taking over from Justin Onclin, who has been in place here since 2007. Drinking Window 2028 - 2040"
91-92 JAMES SUCKLING: "A firm, silky red with medium body, fine tannins and a creamy finish. A little short, but nice fruit. Rather subdued now."
92-94 ANTONIO GALLONI: "The 2020 Villemaurine is impressive. There is plenty of the textural richness readers have come to expect, but I also find quite a bit of energy in the 2020. Raspberry jam, mocha, espresso, spice, new leather and cedar all race across the palate. The interplay of plushness and energy is simply compelling. This is an especially fine vintage for Villemaurine. Tasted three times."
92-94 NEAL MARTIN: "The 2020 Villemaurine presents a lovely bouquet of perfumed black cherries, blueberry and strawberry scents that burst from the glass; there’s real energy and depth here. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and ripe, with supple tannins, a silky mouthfeel and a precise finish that has just the right amount of sapidity. This is another excellent wine from a Saint-Émilion enjoying a strong run of form."
93-95 THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Richly colored, the nose is filled with dark chocolate, licorice, smoke, black cherry, plum and herbs get the wine moving. On the palate the wine is lush, fleshy, sweet, ripe and polished, finishing with opulently textured fruits and freshness. This is the last vintage for Justin Onclin as the owner. The estate was sold earlier this year."
93-95 JEB DUNNUCK: "The 2020 Château Villemaurine has a modern vibe, but it’s impeccably made, and I suspect will show plenty of classic Saint-Emilion character at maturity. Lots of pure cassis and blue fruits as well as notes of espresso, vanilla, and flowers define the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with beautiful purity, perfectly integrated acidity and tannins, and a great finish. I tasted this on three separate occasions and rated it as high as 97 points for one bottle, but I’m being conservative with the barrel review. Regardless, it’s a smoking good wine."
